Book review: 21세기 신수 신 정석

21세기 신수 신 정석

I'd like to review the 21세기 신수 신 정석 series written by Lee Changho and Song Gi-chang.
As you might know Lee Changho is a 9p and considered to be one of the best Baduk players of the 20th and 21st century, Song Gi-chang is coauthor of many Baduk Books and a honorary 8d in Korea.

Ok lets get this started.

Physical Review

The series consists of 3 hardcover books which feature a picture of Lee Changho and with the nice Korean font they look really well. The pages are made of relatively thin and rough paper but they don't feel cheap, in fact they are nice and comfortable to flip. One page contains 2 whole board diagrams with description(or one if it's the first page of a chapter) so you get over 1500 diagrams.

Content Review

If you didn't already know, this series is about Jeongseok and Poseok, and that's what you get.
And not only a bit but quite a lot to be honest. The Jeongseok are presented in 59 chapters (21 in Volume 1, 21 in Volume 2 and 17 in Volume 3).
The 1st Volume covers the 4-4 Point(2-space high pincer, one space low pincer, side attachment),
Sanrensai, some 3-4 Jeongseok ans something that I cannot really describe.
The 2nd Volume covers a lot of Shimari openings(including a 3 stone Shimari), a weird 6-3 Jeongseok, once again the 1-space low and 2-space high pincer from 4-4 and the 2-space high pincer from a 3-4 stone.
The 3rd Volume covers 2-space high and 1-space low pincer from 4-4, Chinese Poseok, Mini Chinese Poseok and the Kobayashi Poseok. All the chapters start with a position from a game played by Pros or Yeongusaeng which is then analysed.

As you might have noticed the content is divided chaotically between the three volumes despite the fact that they where all released at the same time, I don't know why they did this but it can be really confusing. But up to now I could only find one mistake in all of the diagrams (11 and 17 look nearly the same but interchanging this two moves would not be very wise[3rd Volume, page 76, upper diagram]) so I can forgive this strange decision and give this books 9 out of 10 points(10 if the chapters where arranged in a way that would make a little bit more sense).

Should I Get This Books?

You should if you:
      1. Are a mid to high Dan player
      2. Like to study Jeongseok and Poseok
      3. Know some basic Korean(the better your judgment the less Korean you'll need)
Alot of the Jeongseok presented are REALY COMPLICATED so Kyu players might want to stay away from this books but who am I to order you to not get this books, if you like to study Jeongseok(like I do) this books will be a nice thing to have. Volume 1 is also always a great thing to have as it covers a lot of the common pincer Jeongseok and therefore can be really usefull. However they where published in 2005 so they don't contain the most recent research.

Some example varitions:
