First Amateur Player Turns Pro Under New System

An otherwise normal game in the main tournament of the 39th Myeongin has become a sensation. This is because amateur go player, Cho Insun 7D, just turned pro under the Korean Baduk Association’s new points system. On September 20, 2011, Cho Insun began his Myeongin game with Park Jeonggeun 4P in more or less the usual way. However, he knew that if he won the game he would be allowed to turn professional. And so did everyone else. Despite the pressure and anticipation of others, Cho played an excellent game, grabbing a win as well as the points he needed to take his tally to the crucial number, 100. Under the new system, amateur players can accumulate points for performing well in the professional tournaments that allow amateurs to qualify and compete. Some examples of these are the LG Cup, the Samsung Cup and, of course, the Myeongin. Cho is the first player to reach 100 points under this system and become pro. Perhaps his story will inspire other aspiring amateurs worldwide? Congratulation Cho Insun 1P.

Victory against Youngshin 8dan professional

At long last I finally managed to win at 3 handicap stones against Youngshin. She held out very well against me usually in our games but today she finally fell! Next step is winning at two handicap stones. - adoreme

I guess the game says everything that is to be said. A stronger player probably would think of me as a savage on the board. >.>

Yesterday evening I play another game with Mikyeong 8p and shortly after I build my position she went to invade it deeply instead of reducing safely. Long story short she died on the board very big.

The second game is against Kyoungnang 7dan who I played the day before yesterday. This game got very close and at some point I thought I lost it but somehow the endgame went favorable for me so I won!

I got to fight him like I wanted but as the attacks did not pay as well as I hoped the game got close and then losing the three stones in a net was giving the killing blow.

Shogi bot beats female Shogi professional!

Let me quote the website:

"Just like the Chess computer “Deep Blue” which has beaten the humanbeing, the computer Shogi(Japanese Chess) software, “Akara 2010″ has beaten the woman shogi master Shimizu, through a fight up to 6 hours. “Akara 2010″ is the latest development on Shogi computer software, and is a combination of 4 softwares which are sold as different packages at retail. It decides the next move by majority voting of the 4 softwares, and if they get even on the draw on 2 by 2, the strongest software “Gekisashi” will make the final decision.

The last Shogi fight between man and computer was in 2007, using a software called “Bonanza”, which the computer lost the title. Now this time the software wins for the first time, with the struggle for 35 years, just keep on losing.

As the next move, the “Akara 2010″ will be challenging a male shogi master in about half a year, and if the software will win, the new challenge against the strongest master is going to be made."

Drooping Lotus, the holy grail of handicap.

Today I can show you two games I played. One from yesterday with Yoon Youngsun 8p which I lost and the other from just an hour ago against Kang Kyoungnang 7d. Good news is that against 7dans I graduated to 2 stones handicap now.

The first game is against Youngsun. Actually I had planned to play the drooping lotus again but due to a bug with Wbaduk our games had to be restarted. Of course Youngsun noticed what I had planned and quickly thwarted it by not approaching my corners directly anymore. So we developed a unique fighting game in which I had the advantage a long time but then in the ko I played a bad threat which was the losing move and all fighting could not save me anymore. Next follows my game with Kyoungnang. Here I got to play my joseki of choice in a alternated variations but you can easily see the overwhelming amount of influence I got from it. She had to invade again and again and again to keep staying in the game but of course doing this the game was favorable for me all the time. I just had to chase the groups around and increasing my potential territory until white finally collapsed and had to give me stones on the right side. With that I could safely sail home. On a side note: My endgame needs a lot improvement.

So what is the difference between those two games except the obvious one stone handicap difference? Similar at first sight is the definite style of making the game unusual and complicated as fast as possible. We weaker players tend then to make mistakes that will be exploited to maximum profit. See the first game as example.
Another distinct fact is that in handicap games I play and see the course of the game usually goes for a moyo-style or influence based game, as if guided by invisible hand. And then when the time is right a deadly invasion or complicated reduction come.
The 8p resolutely struck down the first mistakes to full intent while against the 7d one could hold on and suffer some damage first before sinking completely. The ko in the second game was a tremedous step forward for white but only the mistake by black in the end allowing the reduction sealed the fate of the game.

Hope vs despair in a reading battle. I need to study to read more and read more quickly. Time to prepare for the next battles against pros~~~
